Bears Leave Arctic For Adelaide Goodwill Mission

After another successful campaign on and off the court in Alice Springs it was nice to know that some funds were also raised for the Leukaemia Foundation. All the profits from the sale of the shirts, caps, stubby holders along with some generous donations went to this worthwhile cause. In total we were able to hand over $1600 to the foundation. We hope to make this an ongoing commitment from the Polar Bears with future profits from the sale of merchandise being pledged. After meeting with one of our sponsors (Ben Nelson) we have many new ideas for different types of merchandise. Watch this space!

Signed singlet for Mark Ricciuto

Recently the Director of Operations and Director of Property & Finance took a trip to Adelaide to personally hand over the donation and to present Mark Ricciuto (Owner of the Alma Hotel) with a signed singlet from the Polar Bears over 35's Alice Springs side. The memento was given for his generous sponsorship and was graciously received by 'Roo'. We have promised him we will support his Hotel when in Adelaide for the Australian Masters in Oct 2011. Also at the presentation at the Alma was Ben Nelson. Ben was responsible for organising all the new uniforms and other merchandise. We all agree we looked the part in Alice and thank him for all his efforts in getting us decked out!

Presentation to Leukaemia Foundation

After leaving the Alma we visited the Leukaemia Foundation' South Australian office where we presented a cheque to the General Manager of SA & NT, Simon Matthais and the Business Relationship Manager, Karen Gillon. It was a good feeling to know that we are helping a really worthwhile foundation.

The Bad Boys of the Arctic

The team formed as a combination of players from the Riverland district in South Australia, the Alice Springs side, and a couple from Mount Isa who were playing for the Darwin side who all hit it off after playing against each other at the Alice Springs Masters.

The team was originally called "Rivisa Springs", being a combination of Riverland, Isa, and Alice Springs. The first tournament played as a team was at the Adelaide Masters games in 2007 where we should have won the division but due to a scoring technicality didn't.

Whilst in Adelaide with a few Coopers Darkies down his throat, one of the members was looking at a poster of a polar bear laying on his back, when he was hit by a brainwave that resulted in the team becoming the Rivisa Springs Polar Bears.

It was later decided to drop the Rivisa Springs part of the name, partly due to the confusion it caused administrators and team members, but also because there was a good sprinkling of Mildura boys in the team that were getting a bit sooky about being left off the name.

The team has grown to include members from Mt Isa, Riverland, Mildura, Alice Springs, Adelaide and Cairns.
